NORTHERN SHIELD discovers “micro-fragment” of kimberlite near Kapuskasing, Ontario
Additional high priority kimberlite targets identified from new airborne survey
Ottawa (December 4, 2003) – Northern Shield Resources Inc (“Northern” NRN: TSX-V) is pleased to announce that a “micro-fragment” of kimberlite was recovered from a heavy mineral sample taken in at its 100% owned Bradley Property in northern Ontario. The “micro-fragment,” approximately 1.5 mm in diameter, consists of a G9 pyrope grain mantled with a kelyphite rim and adhering phlogopite, serpentine and the occasional Cr-spinel and orthopyroxene. The sample also contained 11 olivine grains and an eclogitic garnet, most of which are in 1-2 mm size fraction. The sample was taken in overburden at a depth of 10-15 meters with a Pionjar drill. As the sample tube on the drill is small, the sample weighed only 0.6 kg. A second pyrope mantled with a kelyphite rim was identified in another sample taken approximately 30 km away. Both samples were taken in overburden down-ice from circular magnetic anomalies and are in the vicinity of numerous other kimberlite and diamond indicators including eclogitic garnet, picro-ilmenite, Cr-diopside and chromite. Nineteen other pyropes, including two G10 pyropes, were recovered from a total of forty samples taken during Northern Shield’s fall sample program.
The samples were picked at Overburden Drilling Management in Ottawa and were then sent to the CANMET laboratory for microprobe analysis. SEM (scanning electron microscope) images of the “micro-fragment” can be seen on the Company’s website.
Due to the positive indicators of a proximal kimberlitic source, Northern Shield has recently completed a high-resolution airborne magnetic survey over two small blocks contiguous with the survey area reported in Northern’s press release dated November 18, 2003. Three additional high priority kimberlite targets have been identified from this survey bringing the total to 10 high priority targets and over 35 other targets.
"Based on these encouraging sample results coupled with our data from several airborne geophysical surveys, we believe there is potential for a cluster of kimberlite pipes within the Bradley Project area", said Ian Bliss, President and CEO of Northern Shield. "Not only are many of the kimberlite targets very large, but they are relatively easily accessible, being located within a hundred kilometers of a highway,” added Bliss.
The Bradley Property is located in the James Bay Lowlands north of Kapuskasing, Ontario. Much of the Property area is accessible by forestry and winter roads. A diamond drill program is being planned for early January.
Northern Shield is a publicly traded Canadian mineral exploration company (NRN:TSX-V) that believes that the key to exploration success and the creation of investor value is found in a combination of ingenuity, technical expertise and efficiency. All of the Company’s current properties are in northern Ontario.
