NORTHERN SHIELD RECOVERS CHROMITITE BOULDER FROM HIGHBANK LAKE PROPERTY, NORTHERN ONTARIO

Ottawa (October 19, 2005) - Northern Shield Resources Inc. ("Northern Shield") [TSX-V: NRN] is pleased to announce that it has recovered a chromitite boulder from its Highbank Lake PGE (platinum group element) property in northern Ontario. The boulder, weighing approximately 5 kg, was discovered in overburden near the centre of the property and consists of alternating layers of chromitite with layers of disseminated chromite with minor nickel sulphides (millerite and violarite). The thickest layer visible in the boulder is approximately 2 centimeters. The boulder assayed 29.4 % chromium and returned moderately anomalous concentrations of platinum (180 ppb), palladium (86 ppb) and nickel (0.09%).

Northern Shield believes the discovery is very important as it, together with the abundance of chromite grains and chromitite fragments previously recovered during exploration from stream sediment samples, provides further indication of the presence of a significant mafic / ultramafic layered intrusion beneath the till cover at Northern Shield’s Highbank Lake Property. Most of the world’s platinum deposits are contained within layered intrusions. The presence of chromitite layers highlights the possible potential for the presence of PGE's which are often closely associated with the chromitite layers. Chromite is also the source for chrome metal. There is currently no significant operating chromium mines in North America.

Mineral identification was conducted by Overburden Drilling Management of Ottawa, using binocular microscope and SEM (scanning electron microscope). The boulder was analysed at SGS Laboratories in Don Mills, Ontario. Platinum, palladium and gold were analysed by fire assay using lead collection. All other elements were analysed by ICP-OES after sodium peroxide fusion.

The Highbank Lake Property covers a recently discovered layered intrusion that is being explored for reef-hosted PGEs (Platinum Group Elements) and chromium. Impala Platinum Ltd of South Africa has the Option of earning a 60% interest in the platinum rights of the Property by incurring $5 million in exploration expenditures within five years.

Northern Shield is an innovative, results-driven Canadian company focused on diamond and Platinum Group Element (PGE) exploration in Ontario. Its mission is to create a successful mineral exploration company through technical excellence and efficient management, where success is measured by the identification and development of high-quality mineral exploration projects, which may ultimately be optioned, sold or developed for maximum return on investment.
