Northern Shield Resources Identifies and Stakes Vast Layered Intrusion Target in James Bay Lowlands
Ottawa (November 7, 2007) - Northern Shield Resources Inc. ("Northern Shield") (TSX-V: NRN) is pleased to announce that it has identified and staked what management believes to be a vast layered intrusive complex in the James Bay Lowlands of northern Ontario. The property, which is owned 100% by Northern Shield, currently covers an area of 700 square kilometres and staking continues.
The target is approximately 1000 square kilometres and is located immediately adjacent to the Highbank Lake intrusion, which is being explored by Northern Shield and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. for reef-hosted PGEs. Identification of this possible layered intrusion called “Eastbank” by Northern Shield is based on management’s interpretation of the regional magnetics and understanding of the regional structure. The magnetic bands of the new target appear to merge with the layered intrusion at Highbank Lake suggesting that the area may be underlain by a very large layered intrusive complex composed of two lobes: the Highbank Lobe and the Eastbank Lobe (the new property), which combine to cover an area over 1,500 square kilometres. The fold pattern and magnetic signature suggest that the Eastbank lobe is likely dominated by mafic-ultramafic rocks that commonly compose the lower stratigraphy of a layered intrusion which are ideal targets for reef hosted PGE-(Cr) and Ni-Cu-PGE deposits. (See Northern Shield’s website for images of the target).
Northern Shield has also staked two distinct magnetic anomalies on the fringe of Eastbank that have been interpreted as possible ultramafic bodies with potential to host Ni-Cu-(PGE) massive sulphides.
According to geological maps of the area, the Eastbank Target is covered in most part, if not completely, by a thin layer of Paleozoic rocks (limestone, sandstone), estimated to be about 75 meters thick. Both Highbank Lake and the Eastbank target are located along a major terrain boundary that forms the southern limit of the Oxford-Stull Geological terrain. This terrain hosts an unusually high number of mafic-ultramafic intrusions that are very fertile in PGEs including Big Trout Lake, Lansdowne House, Eagle-One (Noront Resources Ltd.) and Highbank Lake. Following on the encouraging drill results from the 2007 drill program at Highbank Lake, Northern Shield is looking forward to continue its aggressive exploration of the Highbank Lake Intrusion and the Eastbank property.
Northern Shield is planning a winter exploration program at Eastbank including an airborne geophysical program at the earliest opportunity.
